This course uses the IFSTA textbook Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 2nd Edition. You are strongly encouraged to use the reading assignments in this manual to supplement your learning.
This course is based on NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructors (Chapter ), and may lead to Pro Board certifications. This course is specialized for the Fire Instructor I who is ready to advance to the next level of instructor certification for his/her department. This course consists of subjects designed to give the fire instructor more knowledge of preparing training so that he/she can develop lesson plans and present longer instruction sessions in his/her department.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Portland Fire Department Fire Instructor 1 course. This course will help you understand the role and responsibilities of a fire instructor. We will be using the IFSTA Fire Instructor Manual 9th edition. The self-paced class will begin on September 1 and end at the end of September. The final exam will be held on three different days: September 30, October 2, and October 4. Preface
The International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute (IPSLEI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation organized to support the development of excellence in public safety leadership and organizations. IPSLEI was formed in the spring of 2006 to continue the public safety industry collaborative in leadership and ethics that the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Public Safety Education Advisory Committee initiated with a Carl D. Perkins VETA Grant for the development of a comprehensive program for public safety leadership development.
The original program, known as The California Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Program, originated in 2001. Through the leadership and vision of the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Public Safety Education Advisory Committee, the program gained national attention. This national interest led to the formation of IPSLEI and the expansion of the program beyond California. The United States National Fire Academy endorsed the IPSLEI program, and the United States Fire Administration recognized IPSLEI with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
In the spirit of the original design work, IPSLEI promotes a dynamic blend of unique, humanities-oriented leadership development with a case-study approach to explore the reality of the leadership challenges that public safety professionals face at every level.
IPSLEI continuously seeks the input of public safety and academic professionals throughout the world to maintain an energetic, visionary, and realistic approach to facilitating the growth of excellence in public safety leadership.
It is the desire of IPSLEI that through effective, realistic, and purposeful leadership dialogue and interaction among public safety personnel from all disciplines and at every level, we learn the true meaning of interoperability and create the safest environments for our organizations and our communities. Course Overview
This is a hybrid course including both online and face-to-face components. Online modules will run from [JUNE 17] to [AUGUST 12] for 8 weeks. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions online before posting assignments each week by midnight on any given day. Students must remember that instructors will respond to emails within 2 business days.

The required text for the course is IFSTA’s Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer, 5th edition.
Every student must have a copy of the text in order to prepare for class, study for the certification process, and complete the assignments and learning activities.
Students will be provided with online access through ResourceOne to daily activities to be completed as assigned.
OPTIONAL
While not required, the Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer, 5th edition Exam Prep is a valuable tool to help a student or candidate to successfully pass a written exam based on the content of this course. This exam prep is available in print and electronic versions.

This on-line course covers the principles of effective curriculum design. It stresses the principles of adult learning and student-centered learning. Designing courses and units that address learning, performance, and behavioral objectives is the program goal.
Fire Service Course Design covers IFSTA: Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 9th Edition Chapters 11-15- Manager: Mike Bloski
Snyder Fire Dept. Firefighter 1. This course will be mostly online with skill practice dates every other Saturday unless deemed necessary to add a few Saturdays back to back. This course will typically consist of 3-5 chapters due every two weeks. The chapters will have a open and close date to keep most students in the same area, to make it easier for instructors to assist where needed. There will be optional PowerPoints lectures throughout the 2 week period. These will be optional but highly encouraged. This is the first academy that is being taught since having a new training coordinator. If problems arise the Training coordinator will do everything possible to resolve any issue that presents itself.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand and apply the principles of fire behavior, building construction, water distribution systems, fixed fire protection systems, ventilation, hose streams, fire prevention and inspections, ladders, and rescue techniques. (NFPA 1001: Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications). A score of 70% or better is required on all course examinations. Students are required to achieve 100% satisfactory completion of all required skills and receive a satisfactory evaluation by the instructor. Students must successfully complete the final, written examination to be eligible to take the practical examination.
Course Content: Major topics covered in the course are the fire department organization, communications, the incident command system, ropes and knots, fire behavior, safety, fire prevention, personal protective equipment, fire extinguishers, respiratory protection, ventilation, hose lines, forcible entry, search and rescue procedures, and ladder and sprinkler systems.
