Chapter 21 - Online Activity Submission Dropbox
Student Activity:
For this activity you will teach middle school students how past incidents have developed into current fire regulations. Follow the steps below to complete this activity.
Step One: Using the list of “Significant Historical Events” found on pp. 12-15 of your manual, research at least two (2) of these events and create an informational handout. The handout should:
- Be visually interesting (not just a bunch of text and have visuals that are age appropriate).
- Contain more information than just what is in the manual (cite at least two [2] other reputable sources).
- Deliver a clear safety message that is age appropriate (middle school students).
Step Two: You will upload your handout by [deadline here] to the R1 classroom dropbox.
Use both the manual and other resources (both print and online) in your jurisdiction to help discover more information about these historical events.

Student Activity:
For this activity you will develop questions that can be used during a preincident survey. Follow the steps below to complete this activity.
Step One: Within your group, review the Preincident Survey Form. Discuss how the information required on the form relates to the occupancy type assigned by the instructor.
Step Two: Create an interview “script” for a firefighter to use when performing a preincident planning survey of your assigned occupancy type. The script will include:
- Steps to take in performing the survey
- Questions to ask the owner/occupant at each stage of the survey
- Information to share with the owner/occupant
- Additional information to be collected (photographs, floorplans, etc.)
Your script does not need to be word-for-word, (“Good Morning Ms. _____, my name is…”) but should include enough detail that a firefighter will know what to say and ask (Example: “Greet the owner/occupant. Introduce yourself and other members of your team”).
Step Three: As a group, upload your script to the dropbox by [deadline here].
