This course is designed for fire service personnel who will be involved in Community Risk Reduction in the role of Fire and Life Safety Educator for their community. The topics covered include how people learn, focusing on different learning styles and multiple intelligences; lesson planning; curricula review; public speaking; program evaluation and connecting lessons to the MA Curriculum Frameworks as they relate to school-based educational opportunities.

There will also be significant work in the areas of Community Risk Reduction (CRR) including data gathering/analysis; budget administration; subordinate evaluation; identifying community resources/partners; policies/sop’s and media relations. The course concludes with students developing/delivering a segment of instruction on an identified risk within their community to a specified age group.

This course consists of forty (39) hours of classroom training and twenty (21) hours of out-of-class homework.

 

Successful completion of this course satisfies the practical requirement for the ProBoard certification examination. For those eligible, an opportunity to take the written certification examination will be scheduled for the last day of the course.

 

This course meets or exceeds the job performance requirements in the NFPA Standard 1030 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Prevention Positions, Fire and Life Safety Educator I/II (Chapters 9 & 10) (2024 edition).
