This is a blended format course for the Advanced Technician Firefighter Certification. It has been reviewed and approved by the IL Office of the State Fire Marshal.

You must complete the online portion in addition to a hands-on practical portion. The online portion includes reading assignments, online activities, and quizzes.  Weekly assignments will be posted on the course website. The dates for the practical portion will be assigned to you by your training officer. Failure to complete an assignment or to complete a practical will result in failure of the course.

In order to be certified as an Advanced Technician Firefighter, you must meet the following pre-requisites:

  • Certification as a Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter
  • Successful completion of the Advanced Technician Firefighter course. 
  • Passage of the State written examination.
  • Passage of the State practical skills examinations.
  • Attainment of 3 years fire service experience beginning from the Basic Operations Firefighter/Firefighter II certification date. 
  • Fire Service Vehicle Operator certification. 
  • Vehicle and Machinery Operations certification. 
  • Required NIMS 200. 

You will take the certification test after completion of the course, however, you will not be certified until meeting all the requirements.
