Fairmount Fire Rescue - Firefighter II - 2019
Chapter 21 - Online Activity Submission Dropbox
Student Activity 1:
For this activity you will teach middle school students how past incidents have developed into current fire regulations. Follow the steps below to complete this activity.
Step One: Using the list of “Significant Historical Events” found on pp. 12-15 of your manual, research at least two (2) of these events and create an informational handout. The handout should:
- Be visually interesting (not just a bunch of text and have visuals that are age appropriate).
- Contain more information than just what is in the manual (cite at least two [2] other reputable sources).
- Deliver a clear safety message that is age appropriate (middle school students).
Step Two: You will upload your handout by [deadline here] to the R1 classroom dropbox.
Use both the manual and other resources (both print and online) in your jurisdiction to help discover more information about these historical events.
Sample Rubric:
Standard | 1 – Poor | 2 – Below Average | 3 – Average | 4 – Excellent | Student Total |
Information | Handout presents the information found in the manual on one event; does not use any external sources | Handout presents the information found in the manual on two events; does not use any external sources | Handout presents more information than the manual on two events using two external sources | Handout presents more information than the manual on more than two events using more than two external sources |
|
Safety message | Safety message is not clear, and there is no direct evidence one is attempted | Safety message is not clear, but there is an attempt to create one | Safety message is either clear or age appropriate but not both | Safety message is clear and age appropriate |
|
Visual interest | Handout does not use visuals at all | Handout uses visuals, but there are either too many (and are distracting) or not enough (and do not support the information); needs major editing before distribution | Handout uses visuals to reinforce information without being a distraction; needs minor editing before distribution | Handout uses visuals effectively and could be distributed as is with no further editing |

Student Activity 2:
For this activity you will develop questions that can be used during a preincident survey. Follow the steps below to complete this activity.
Step One: Within your group, review the Preincident Survey Form. Discuss how the information required on the form relates to the occupancy type assigned by the instructor.
Step Two: Create an interview “script” for a firefighter to use when performing a preincident planning survey of your assigned occupancy type. The script will include:
- Steps to take in performing the survey
- Questions to ask the owner/occupant at each stage of the survey
- Information to share with the owner/occupant
- Additional information to be collected (photographs, floorplans, etc.)
Your script does not need to be word-for-word, (“Good Morning Ms. _____, my name is…”) but should include enough detail that a firefighter will know what to say and ask (Example: “Greet the owner/occupant. Introduce yourself and other members of your team”).
Step Three: As a group, upload your script to the dropbox by [deadline here].
Sample Rubric:
Criteria | 1 – Poor | 2 – Below Average | 3 – Average | 4 – Excellent | Student Total |
Procedure | Script is missing steps needed in procedure | Script generally outlines procedure but may be out of order | Script generally outlines procedure but may not be detailed | Script clearly outlines entire procedure needed for preincident survey |
|
Questions | Script questions are all too general to ensure occupants understand context | Script includes at least one question with a general example | Script includes questions with general examples | Script includes relevant questions with specific examples to help occupant understand context |
|
Results | Script does not include discussing results with owner/ | Script includes discussing some results with owner/ occupant | Script includes discussing all results with owner/ occupant | Script includes discussing all results with owner/occupant and suggests steps for follow-up |
