Welcome to the Firefighter I course made for Teller County and trained by Cripple Creek. This course is designed to prepare you for the Firefighter I level personnel certification process.

This course will challenge you to be self-motivated in learning and comprehending the material provided.  Below you will see a breakdown, by week, for what you are expected to do to be successful for this course. Keep in mind the times provided are estimations on the high end of what we are expecting it to take you to go through the material. 

We have scheduled 64 hours of in person classes with an 8-hour practical day. This is the in-person time spent with Cripple Fire Personnel that has been scheduled. You can expect to spend approximately 10-15 hours of time, per week, completing the online portion of this training. With a total of 144 hours of training.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course prepares firefighters to conduct company inspections while studying the International Fire Code, Oregon State Fire Marshal Fire Regulations, and related Oregon revised statutes, National Fire Prevention Association, and other codes relating to fire prevention and life safety.

This course covers the cognitive domain and foundational knowledge needed to advance to the EDS Hands On skills weeks. There are 5 Teams/Zoom sessions scheduled, each 4-hours in duration, for a total of 20 instructional hours during this portion. Additional instructional hours will occur in the classroom and on the drill ground during the two-week hands on skills session. There will be 32 hours of classroom followed by 48 hours of drill ground training.

Following the conclusion of the EDS, students will be eligible to sit for the Nevada State Fire Marshal Driver Operator certification exam.

IFSTA 7th Edition Essentials of Firefighting (Firefighter 1 and 2) coursework. YOU MUST STILL READ THE BOOK! This is an additional resource only. This will not cover everything you need to know, nor intended to be a stand alone method to pass the Academy.

This course provides the components of building construction related to firefighter and life safety. The elements of construction and design of structures are shown to be key factors when inspecting buildings, preplanning fire operations and operating at emergencies.

This course and the exams are based on NFPA 1002: Standard on Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications. This course is designed for the firefighter who wishes to advance to the next level of his/her career. This course consists of six modules: Preventive Maintenance, Tests and Inspections, Driving/Operating, Water Supply, Sprinklers and Standpipes, and Operations. This is a physically demanding course which requires students to be in good physical condition.

This is the first course in the Fire Officer series, addressing the job performance requirements of Supervisory Fire Officer as defined in NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. This course includes topics such as the company officer’s duties and responsibilities, leadership and supervision, human resources management, communications, administrative functions, and health and safety issues. Also included in this course are topics including company level training, community relations, pre-incident surveys, and the delivery of emergency services.

Once you make access to the course, begin with the chapter 1 power point/lesson and quiz and then the chapter test. Continue on through the course/chapters. Note that some chapters will have skill sheets after the lesson. Use those for reviews and practice for the state skills. There are 2 days scheduled for Instructional days on June 12 &13th. This course is designed for the highly motivated, self-directed student with access to high-speed internet who can commit to an aggressive training schedule in a compressed time format. Students will be expected to read three chapters, complete the respective on-line interactive slides shows and score at least 70% on three on-line chapter tests each week. Students will be monitored and assisted by an instructor through email and on-line course contact. Corresponding skills instruction and evaluation will occur at a training facility. This course prepares new firefighters to operate under direct supervision in the exterior or non-IDLH areas of the fire scene only. It is also the prerequisite course for participating in the SCBA/ Interior Firefighting Operations-FF-1 course. Students participate in training covering firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE), self-contained breathing apparatus inspection and cylinder changing, fire department communications, building construction and fire behavior, modern fire control research, portable fire extinguishers, rope and knot tying, ground ladders, forcible entry, tactical ventilation theory, water supply, hose and fire streams, loss control, orientation to fire origin and cause determination, fire prevention and life safety initiatives, confined space awareness, Firefighter post fire decontamination, overview of first aid and buddy care, and Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations.
Completion of this course achieves the 19 objectives of function 4.1 Exterior Firefighter of the OFPC Recommended Best Practices for FD Training Programs (01/15) document.

This course is designed to introduce the student to Aerial Apparatus in a broad sense and provide an emphasis on aerial apparatus driving and maneuvering, positioning of the apparatus for tactical operations, laddering, and elevated fire stream operations. This course meets and exceeds DPSST requirements for certification in Fire Apparatus Equipped with an Aerial Device. The course shall provide ample opportunity for hands on experience for all students with truck companies from the central Oregon area.
