Course Description: IFSTA Hazardous Materials Technician Online Supplemental Course

This online IFSTA Hazardous Materials Technician course is designed to supplement the 80-hour, two-week PER-293 HazMat/WMD Technician for Surface Transportation course conducted at the Security and Emergency Response Training Center in Pueblo, Colorado. The course uses the IFSTA Hazardous Materials Technician, 3rd Edition textbook as the primary instructional reference and is intended to reinforce, expand, and validate the knowledge required of personnel preparing to operate at the Hazardous Materials Technician level.

This course is also intended to provide the didactic instruction necessary to prepare students to complete the Nevada State Fire Marshal’s written examination for Hazardous Materials Technician certification. Through structured textbook-based learning, students will review and apply key Hazardous Materials Technician concepts, terminology, operational principles, and decision-making considerations aligned with technician-level response expectations.

Course content includes hazard recognition and identification, chemical and physical properties, monitoring and detection, personal protective equipment, decontamination, product control, confinement and containment tactics, transportation-related hazardous materials incidents, WMD considerations, incident management, and responder safety.

This course is not intended to replace hands-on technician training, field-based skills instruction, or practical competency evaluation. Instead, it serves as the academic and knowledge-development component that supports the practical training received during the SERTC PER-293 course while preparing students for the Nevada State Fire Marshal’s written certification exam.

Upon completion, students should have a stronger working knowledge of Hazardous Materials Technician-level responsibilities and be better prepared to participate in practical skills training, incident-based problem solving, certification testing, and real-world hazardous materials response operations. The course supports the development of competent, risk-based, and safety-focused responders capable of integrating textbook knowledge with practical technician-level hazardous materials response skills.
